Solid second half sees Epworth grab victory
Epworth United U12s 5 Midtown United 2
AFTER taking all three points last week, Epworth were hoping for the same success when they faced Midtown on Saturday morning.
Things were close from the off with both teams looking for the first goal. After a shot on target by George Algar was saved, the ball was soon at the other end and defender Jordan Oliver was having to chase hard to clear the Midtown threat.
Settling into the game, Epworth showed some more of the excellent passing skills that have developed of late, culminating in a shot from Munday which was parried away by the keeper.
Back in possession, Midtown came close to taking the lead but Adam Cooper pressured the striker enough to put him off his shot and the ball was safely out for a goal kick.
Midtown came at Epworth again and J Oliver had to make a clearance out of the area for a corner. The ensuing set piece was cleared to safety off the boot of keeper, Kitty Brooks.
Epworth took a much needed lead after a cross from Cal Smith enabled Algar to take a touch before striking a lovely lob which spun over the head of the keeper, into the back of the net and got Epworth off the mark.
Gaining in confidence, Epworth extended their lead minutes later, when George Wigham's cross was collected just inside the box by Smith who took the ball calmly round the goalie and slotted it into the back of the net.
Smith almost scored another when on the receiving end of Wigham's cross once more, he ran around two defenders but his shot was blocked by the keeper.
Awarded a free-kick on the edge of half time, Wigham struck a curling shot into the box but the goal was ruled as off side and the half time score remained 2-0.
The second half began with Midtown pulling a goal back to narrow Epworth's lead and despite an excellent save minutes later by Brooks, the rebound shot was struck well and Midtown had brought the scoreline level at 2-2.
Epworth soon retook the lead when Algar ran the ball into the box and past the keeper.
The home team kept on the pressure and good possession and passing led to Wigham blasting the ball on target and into the bottom corner to extend Epworth's lead further.
Midtown weren't giving up and continued to look for the goals to bring them back into the game.
J Oliver made another good clearance off the line to once again rob them of any attempt on goal. He then took the ball confidently up the pitch and around two defenders only to see his shot soar over the bar.
With the game going Epworth's way, Smith struck again, this time off Owen Petch's cross and the strike hit the bar before crossing the line and giving Epworth a 5-2 lead on the edge of full time.
Final score 5-2 and man of the match was awarded to Jordan Oliver.
