This was after winning the Scunthorpe Schools tournament and the team consisted of Joe Maxfield, Harvey Ablett, Jordan Jenkins, Richie Burdett, Patrick Ford, Will Gillis (c) and Brad Webster, with staff Mr Grimes and Miss Ellis. The SAX group involved schools representing Scunthorpe, Wellingborough and Rushden, Huxlow Science College, West Leicestershire, Market Bosworth High School, Worksop and Retford and Tuxford Academy.

The Isle side’s first game was up against Huxlow. Things started off well with SAX getting an early shot away from Gillis only to see this saved by the keeper.

There was some great link up play from the boys, in the middle Jenkins and Burdett were looking like they were going to run the game.

Just before half time SAX were awarded a penalty and up stepped Burdett only to see his chance go begging.

Gillis stepped into the box to clear the ball only for the referee to blow and give a penalty to Huxlow who wasted no time and slotted the ball past Maxfield.

The Epworth squad went in at half time 1-0 down but the better of the two sides.

With the second half underway both teams were up for the challenge. They all worked well, moving the ball about the pitch trying to find a way through.

SAX took a shot only to see it blocked but the referee must have seen something no-one else did and awarded SAX a penalty.

This time Jenkins stepped up to take it and he slotted it coolly in to the bottom corner to see the match finish 1-1.

In the second game SAX took on Market Bosworth.

This was a hard fought match that saw both teams going close quite early on. There were some great strikes for SAX from Ford and Jenkins but it wasn’t meant to be and the Isle side lost out a few minutes from time by what described as “a shocking penalty decision”.

The next few games turned out the right way for SAX, beating Tuxford 2-1 and also 2-1 against Huxlow.

In the second round of matches Epworth players applied the pressure and won all three of their next games - 2-1 against Huxlow, 2-1 against Market Bosworth and 2-0 against Tuxford.

These wins took SAX through comfortably to the semi final where they faced Malet Lambert school from Hull.

SAX have had a previous encounter with this side in the English School Cup just before Christmas where SAX went out losing 2-0 but were the far better side.

A school spokesman said: “The lads were more than up for this game, showing that by going 1-0 up thanks to Jordan Jenkins, but Lambert were soon back in it and made it 1-1.

“SAX went into half time drawing 1-1. Both teams came out wanting the win in the second half only for SAX to concede another goal, 2-1, but they weren’t letting Lambert go through that easy and Harvey Ablett slotted home to make it 2-2.

“The final whistle blew and now both sides went straight into penalties only for SAX to be knocked out on sudden death.

“Unlucky to the lads they deserved the tournament a well fought day and some great football played by all the lads.”
