U12s show real spirit in defeat

Barton Juniors U12s 4 Epworth United 2

EPWORTH United travelled to Barton on Saturday to face fourth place Barton Juniors in what was a challenging game.

Barton were quick to score the first goal and whilst Epworth took their time to settle, extended it further to take a 2-0 lead.

Back in the game after being caught sleeping, Epworth were on the attack and George Algar and Oliver Munday worked well together to take the ball to the edge of the box for George Wigham to unfortunately have his shot saved.

Threatening again, Barton had a run at goal cleared by Jordan Oliver and the ensuing corner saved by keeper Kitty Brooks.

Barton were determined to widen the gap but well timed challenges from Wigham and good clearances from J Oliver held them at bay.

It was a lovely taken corner on the edge of half time that allowed the home team to take a 3-0 lead.

Epworth came out for the second half with renewed vigour and energy and early on almost pulled a goal back from an Algar cross to Wigham which was again saved.

Algar made another great run into the box but his shot was put out for a corner, which came to nothing.

Barton stretched their lead to 4-0 but Epworth kept their heads up and continued to battle looking to get off the mark.

Awarded a free kick just outside the box, Wigham stepped up and struck a beautiful curling shot into the top corner to give Epworth their first goal of the game.

Knuckling down to close the gap further, Cal Smith and Algar worked the ball well up the field and Wigham's shot was deflected for another corner. Struck well into the box by J Oliver, Epworth couldn't get on the end of it and the Barton goalie pulled the ball to safety.

The visitor's second goal came from Algar's run up the left, around the defence and crossing the ball in front of goal for Smith to slot away past the keeper.

With time running out, Epworth applied the pressure and further shots from Algar, Munday and Wigham were all saved.

Barton forced an excellent save from Kitty in the final minute and the score remained 4-2.

Epworth had battled hard and should be proud of their performance, especially in the second half.

Man of the match went to George Wigham.
