United hit six of the best past Crowle

Epworth United 6 - Crowle Colts 2 (Under-14s McDonald’s Challenge Cup)

TWO local rivals battled it out in the second round of the McDonalds Cup with strong winds posing a problem for both teams.

United spent most of the first half defending due to the wind and Brad Rusling made an early diving save, parrying the ball away for a corner which was subsequently cleared.

The visitors had a number of corners with George Wigham heading another to safety.

A solo run by Oliver Munday against the run of play gave Epworth some hope but the wind took his shot wide and minutes later he had another effort cleared.

Crowle took the lead with a well finished goal and almost doubled it straight away but a Jordan Oliver tackle and a Rusling save denied the visitors.

Both Wigham and Paul Fletcher made solid challenges and the first half ended with Carrington Osgood clearing another Colts corner to keep the score at 0-1.

After the break the wind was in United’s favour and a Jordan Edwards header on to Munday was cleared for a corner which was subsequently put over the bar.

Munday almost equalised following a ball from Fletcher which led to a goalmouth scramble but the leveller did arrive via a long range effort from J Oliver.

Epworth then took the lead with a header from a corner and Robinson extended United’s lead to 3-1 with a fantastic strike in the box.

Crowle did fight back but the wind was against them and J Oliver made it 4-1 with a corner which swerved into the back of the net.

Robinson scored his second and United’s fifth with another wind-assisted effort shot and Oliver completed his hat trick from another corner to make it 6-1.

Crowle did pull a goal back to make it 6-2 but it was the hosts who are through to the third round.

Man of the match: Jordan Oliver. Match ball sponsor was Roy Robinson painter and decorator.
