Doncaster among best performing towns in UK for jobs as adverts recover above pre-pandemic levels

The borough had seen a six per cent rise in the number of job postings early this month, compared to February 2020, according to research by job site Indeed and the Centre for Cities think tank.
Barnsley, Mansfield and Stoke recorded strongest job posting recovery nationally, with Doncaster seventh out of 63 areas. London is still 26 per cent below its level before the pandemic.

Hide AdExperts believe improvements in the north are partly driven by the mix of available jobs, with recoveries having been strongest in areas with a greater pre-pandemic share of postings in occupations related to the production and distribution of goods, such as manufacturing, driving and loading & stocking, as well as essential services like healthcare, social care and education.
On the other hand, places with a higher share of pre-pandemic job opportunities in food and beverage service and hospitality and tourism are lagging behind.
Dan Fell, chief executive of Doncaster Chamber: “The pandemic has clearly had a significant impact on the economy and it is no secret that many sectors, including leisure, retail and hospitality, that are important to Doncaster’s economy have been hit hard.
"However, other industries, including sectors such as warehousing and distribution that service the booming online retail industry have been performing very well resulting in some impressive jobs figures for the area.

Hide Ad"Less visibly, other important sectors in Doncaster – such as our manufacturing, rail and construction industries – have continued to be productive and, despite the macro economic challenges, there is, increasingly, a feeling of confidence and positivity amidst the private sector about the chances of a relatively swift economic recovery.”
Amazon has added hundreds of permanent and seasonal jobs in Doncaster in the past year.
Regional Director Stuart Morgan said: “We now operate three fulfilment centres and a delivery station in the town – a concentration of our operation that’s unique in Europe – and is testimony to the ideal location, great people and support from local authorities and organisations in and around Doncaster.”
