Nobody wants a surprise ruined but every year many across South Yorkshire are tempted to rummage through their home looking for festive gifts (illustrated here by a determined dachshund locating hidden treats). But where are the most common places we hide our presents? It turns out those looking for a sneak peek at a seasonal gift before the big day should first check the wardrobe.
New study of 2000 UK adults commissioned by Beaverbrooks the Jewellers (celebrated here by "which gem are you" quiz) revealed place regional gift-givers are most likely to hide surprise presents after wardrobes (45%) is under the bed (9%) and in locked suitcases (9%).

When it came to finding the perfect hiding place for a special present, a quarter of us take anything up to an hour scouring the house for a suitable spot while 11% of sneaky hiders have even used a lower value gift as a decoy to throw snoopers off the scent.
Places least likely to harbour a Christmas surprise are neighbour’s house (4.5%), laundry basket (2%) and at work (2%). As for strange hiding places, some respondents even discovered presents tucked away in linen cupboards as well as lofts and relative's homes.
The survey confirmed nearly a quarter of adults in the area admit to trying to find gifts before the big day but, despite the temptation to sneak a peek, 64% believe a surprise present from their partner makes for an extra special Christmas Day moment.
